Recovery Controller
The voice on the other end of the phone. You take the job, work out who goes, and keep everyone informed until the vehicle is recovered.
The Role
Controllers run the operation. Calls come in from motoring clubs, insurers, the police and members of the public. You log the job, work out which driver is closest and best equipped, dispatch them, and manage the customer’s expectations while they wait.
When it’s busy you’ll be juggling a queue of jobs against a finite number of drivers, making judgement calls about what’s urgent. A vehicle in a live motorway lane always beats a car on a driveway, and you’ll get very good at that kind of triage.
What You’ll Be Doing
- Taking breakdown and recovery calls from clubs, insurers, police and the public
- Logging jobs accurately and gathering the right details first time
- Allocating drivers based on location, equipment and workload
- Prioritising a live job queue, safety-critical work first
- Keeping customers updated with honest ETAs
- Liaising with police and Highways on incidents where needed
- Handing over cleanly at the end of shift
What We’re Looking For
Essential
- •Clear, confident telephone manner
- •Ability to stay calm and organised when it’s busy
- •Good geography or the willingness to learn it fast

Helpful, but not essential
- •Recovery, breakdown or transport control experience
- •Emergency services control room background

Plenty of our best controllers came from customer service or logistics rather than recovery. If you’re organised and good with people, we’ll teach you the rest.
